Quality control in China fails when it is treated as a single inspection at the end of an order. A late check can find defects, but it cannot prevent them. Effective China quality control works as a system: supplier selection before production, defined checkpoints during production, and feedback that changes the next order. For importers, wholesalers, brand owners and e-commerce sellers, the objective is not more inspections in isolation; it is a repeatable quality control services in China programme that matches your product risk, order terms and destination market.
Prevention before production
Most quality risk is committed before mass production starts. Supplier selection should be a documented gate, not a directory search. Our factory audits include background checks and on-site visits around Yiwu and nearby industrial areas such as Jinhua, Yongkang, Pujiang and Dongyang. We review the production environment, equipment and the factory’s own QC system, then grade the supplier A (strategic), B (qualified) or C (observe/remove). Findings are delivered as a risk assessment report before money is committed.
Once a supplier is approved, quality requirements must be written into the order terms, not left to interpretation. Requirement confirmation typically takes 1-3 days. The inspection plan is agreed when the order is placed: standards, AQL level and checkpoints are written into the order terms. Sampling follows ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 / ISO 2859-1, with standard AQL Major 2.5 / Minor 4.0; stricter levels such as 0.65 or 1.0 are available on request. Critical defects are not accepted. Before mass production, the pre-production sample (PPS) is confirmed in writing; that confirmed sample becomes the reference for first-piece and in-process comparisons.
Control points during production
The inspection chain runs IQC (incoming materials), IPQC (in-process), PQC (first-piece), FQC (finished goods) and OQC (outgoing/pre-shipment). These checks are performed by the executing inspection party as part of a sourcing order, coordinated by our team. The full inspection chain is set out in quality control inspection services. A standard control rhythm includes PPS confirmation, at least two in-production checks and final OQC before shipment. During-production inspection compares the first piece against the confirmed PPS and checks appearance, dimensions and weight, function, quantity and assortment, packaging and labelling, accessories and documents, and safety and compliance marks. Critical dimensions are typically within +/-1-5 mm by category; gross weight deviation is within +/-5%. Function tests may include zips cycled 500 times, handle load tests and drop tests. Category add-ons include small-parts and EN71 checks for toys, colourfastness, pH, formaldehyde and azo dyes for textiles, hardness, coating thickness and torque for hardware, and food-contact migration for kitchenware.
Defects are classified and handled at the point of finding:
| Class | Handling |
|---|---|
| Minor | Fix on site, repack or relabel. |
| Major | Rework, replacement of shortfalls, re-inspection before release. |
| Critical (safety hazards, regulatory violations) | Stop shipment, quarantine the batch, root-cause review (8D, 5 Whys, CAPA), re-make or change supplier if needed. |
Feedback that changes the next order
An inspection report is only useful if the information returns to the programme. Every order’s defect data, correction records and re-inspection results are filed. Correction records use 8D, 5 Whys or CAPA as appropriate. Under the 24-48-7 response loop, within 24 hours you receive photos, video and a defect list; containment and a correction plan follow; correction and re-inspection are targeted to complete within 48 hours to 7 days, subject to the factory's rework and the executing inspection party's re-inspection schedule; a re-inspection report with before/after comparison closes the case. Samples and records for every batch are retained for at least 12 months. Where a defect repeats, our working method is to tighten the AQL level or move the order to a different supplier. This is how China quality control becomes cumulative rather than a sequence of unrelated inspection events.
Evidence, not assurances
You should receive evidence that can be checked. Reports are shared as PDF files and contain high-resolution photos, video, a defect list, corrective recommendations and re-inspection records. You may follow inspections by live video. The final inspection report is sent to you for confirmation at least 3 days before shipment. If you designate a third-party inspection agency, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV or Intertek, we coordinate that arrangement; we do not claim partnership, accreditation or affiliation with those agencies.
Where compliance testing fits
Quality control and compliance are different gates. Quality control checks whether your goods match the approved sample and order terms. Compliance testing checks whether the product meets the requirements of the destination market. Testing is arranged per product, per destination market and per batch with accredited ISO 17025 laboratories. Typical scopes include EN71, ASTM F963 and CPSIA, REACH (SVHC and Annex XVII), RoHS, FDA food-contact migration, CE testing (LVD/EMC/RED), FCC Part 15, Children’s Product Certificate (CPC), EU/UK declarations of conformity, multilingual labels and warnings (including Choking Hazard and California Prop 65), MSDS/SDS, certificates of origin (CO / Form A / Form E), UN38.3 for batteries and OEKO-TEX for textiles. Laboratory reports are issued by the laboratory and carry its report number. We are not a testing laboratory and do not issue certificates or test reports in our own name.
Testing fees are paid by you directly to the laboratory; the laboratory quotes its fee against the confirmed test scope before testing starts. Our coordination and document-preparation service fee is CNY 500-2,000 per order. Typical laboratory reports take 15-45 days. Legal responsibility for compliance rests with the manufacturer/importer. We coordinate and match requirements, and can introduce an EU authorised representative. To discuss a quality control system for your next order, contact [email protected].
